Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted to humans by a bite from an infected tick. It is usually easier to treat when it is diagnosed early. If left untreated, there is a risk that a person may develop severe or long-lasting symptoms.

People with Lyme disease react differently to the condition and the symptoms can vary in type and severity. Most people with early symptoms of Lyme disease will develop a flat, circular red rash around the bite, usually within four weeks of being bitten. Not everyone with Lyme disease will develop a rash. Some people experience flu-like symptoms including a high temperate, tiredness, headaches and muscle and/or joint pain.

A blood test is usually used to confirm Lyme disease but it can be difficult to diagnose.
